Auckland Section Upcoming Trips

As well as the planned trips programme below, we are also trying to encourage people to let other Alpine Club members know of trips they are planning at short notice, e.g.deciding on a Thursday "Hey the weather forecast looks great for the weekend, let's go to climbing!" In order to facilitate getting these sorts of trips known we are going to make some changes to the website, but initially we'll just set up a group email list of people that are interested in hearing about these short notice trips. So if you're keen, send us an email and we'll add you to the list.
Email the Trip Organiser (trips@aucklandclimber.org.nz) if you have a suggestion for a trip or would like to lead one.

30 June - 8th July. Southland Section Annual Winter Meet

Homer Hut

Now a regular fixture in the NZAC calendar, the Southland Section is again hosting the Annual Winter Climbing Meet, based, as always, at the Homer Hut, in the Darran Mountains.

This year, The Meet is running from June 30th until July 8th. Registration of interest sooner rather than later would be appreciated. There is a practical limit to the number of people the hut and its environment can handle, lower than in summer, so if demand exceeds this we will have to limit numbers.

The Meet aims to provide an informal and sociable venue where climbers can get together, meet with new partners, perhaps climb in an area they have never visited, and exchange views and ideas on technique and ethics. You don’t need a climbing partner to come along; no-one has ever had any trouble hooking up with one when down there.

Intended mainly for people who already have at least a basic grounding in winter climbing techniques, The Meet is not a climbing school. If you want to learn here, get out and do it on the hill.

We like to see a real mix of climbers attend, from those not long started and building experience, right through to gnarly types poking out new lines at grade 7. People climbing at more modest grades, for whatever reason, may want the encouragement and inspiration the harder climbers can give, and the harder climbers might need to feel that there are others coming along snapping at their heels to keep them onto their game.

Going to the Homer Hut is a natural choice, apart from being right beside the road, big and reasonably comfortable. The Darrans has it all, roadside crags, huge unclimbed faces as big as anything else in New Zealand, peaks waiting a First Winter Ascent, what more could a climber ask!

Apart from the myriad of potential new routes, the established climbs are generally proving to be well worthwhile as well. When conditions are right, skiing in The Darrans is simply superb. 2011 gave fantastic conditions, but unfortunately there’s no certainty of this two years in a row.

Daylight is a bit limited in July, but the weather is often better. Conditions on the cliffs may be a bit less snowy, but will always be “interesting”. No matter what though, there always seems to be a fair bit of climbing gets done.

If you’re considering coming, you do need to be aware that the Darrans in winter can be a big nasty place, and you might have to wait out bad weather. The road can be blocked by avalanches. Bear in mind also, that there is no nearby rescue team. Essentially, you take have to take responsibility for yourself. But don’t let any of that put you off, it’s still the best winter climbing venue in the country.

We look forward to seeing the regulars and new faces as well. Registration and enquiries for further information to:

Girdlestone-Tahurangi Trip. TBC October - Turoa - Mt Ruapehu
Another one of our traditional annual trip to Mt. Ruapehu. This trip is based from the Massey Alpine club hut on the Turoa side of the mountain. This is a great trip to summit the highest point on Mt Ruapehu - Tahurangi. Also great access to Girdlestone, one of the coolest peaks on Ruapehu. Girdlestone offers some of the steeper stuff, and the option to do the traverse from Girdlestone to Tahurangi.
