Auckland Section Upcoming Trips

Folks, you've got to help us here! It's really important that as a club we have lots of interesting trips for members to choose from in both in summer and winter. Many of them will be alpine, but some will be general interest (could be climbing, caving, cycling or kayaking). To do this we need as many people as we can making trip suggestions or organising trips. Our Trips Organiser (email: trips@aucklandclimber.org.nz) is dying (not literally) to hear from members with ideas for trips. Don't be afraid that you don't have the skills to lead a trip you are keen to do – we will hook you up with the right people. We're an Alpine Club after all, we're here to get people into the mountains.

See the Trip Organiser Guidelines to get an idea of what's involved in organising a trip.

The highlighted trips below are organised by NZAC members or sections. Other trips or events are organised by non-members or outside organisations, and NZAC takes no responsibility for such trips/events.

Please see the Alpine Trip Difficulty section on the Trips page for an explanation of the grading of trips.

August 3-13 — Winter Climbing Meet at Mt Cook National Park

This event is 1) to introduce climbers to winter climbing in the big mountains and 2) to allow lonely winter alpinists to team up with others. Why go all the way to Alaska or the Himalaya to wade though deep snow in the freezing cold when you can do it in your own back yard? Winter in New Zealand essentially makes the mountains 2000-3000m higher but without the air getting thinner - wicked! More info www.mountainz.co.nz

August 11/12 — NZAC Southland Section Winter Climbing Meet

Homer Hut – Upper Hollyford Valley. As part of the campaign to get Kiwi climbers into the mountains in winter, Al Walker and the Southland Section of the NZAC are running a climbing meet in the Darran Mountains this winter. This means you can roll up to Homer Hut and there will be people to have great winter missions with. The granite Darrans are legendary for what they provide in winter - snow, ice and frozen turf climbs - most of which are untouched.

From Amanda Holmes and Caroline Lonsdale who attended this course last year: "The guys who run this are out there blasting the ski fields for avalanches, so they are really experienced. The course includes full-scale practice of what to do in an avalanche and includes tests and handouts."
