The overall aim for this course is for participants to finish the season with good habits, the skills required to climb Grade 2 alpine peaks in New Zealand, an understanding of how to manage risk and be self sufficient within this range of challenge. This course is designed for those who have taken part in the Basic Snowcraft course, have applied those skills practically, and are looking for the next step within their climbing.

The course will contain the following:

Theory Evening

  • Date: TBC

  • Location: Auckland | Venue details TBC

  • All participants will be required to attend this and will cover all of the theory for the skills weekends, give you a clear list of gear to purchase /rent/borrow, introduce you to your groups and check participants climbing and rope skills.

Skills Weekend (x2)

Costs
$800 which covers instruction, accommodation, food and travel for both weekends to Tukino Alpine Sports Club. The travel requires a competent 4WD vehicle to get to the lodge which is why travel is organised by the club.

This does not cover gear hire which can be hired from the club at a cost $100 for all of the weekends plus a bond (Transceiver, shovel, probe, crampons and ice axe) which is discounted from the standard rate. As participants might have certain items themselves, the total cost will be calculated in July after the theory day.

Course fees are required to be paid in full to confirm acceptance onto the course. The refund policy is as follows:

  • Made by end of April – Full refund.

  • Made by end of May – 50% refund.

  • Made by end of June – 25% refund.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum requirements for the course are:

  • Completed Basic Snowcraft course and/or similar.

  • Be able to lead climb and belay a lead climber outdoors (Grade 16 at a minimum).

  • Have implemented the skills from Basic Snowcraft course in personal trips. This is a minimum of 6 days (Not including Basic course days and 6 hours alpine travel as a minimum) with clear objectives and either leading or co-leading the trip/objective.

  • Has an alpine log book with the experience above listed clearly.

Participants are encouraged to treat this as a minimum level of experience, the higher the level of confidence in the areas listed above the better the course outcomes. This course is demanding and if not confident in these basic skills it will be hard to retain the information taught on the course.
